August 1, 2012, Fort Collins, Colo. – The Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee (CWAC) hosted a trade team of flour milling managers from Taiwan on a visit to Colorado to learn about the production and quality of Colorado wheat.
On July 19 the trade team was briefed on Colorado wheat production and quality by Plains Grains, Inc. (PGI) Executive Director Mark Hodges, and on the Colorado State University (CSU) wheat breeding program by CSU Wheat Breeder Dr. Scott Haley. They then toured the CSU wheat breeding program located at the Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center (ARDEC). In the afternoon, the team visited the ConAgra Flour Milling Company and Commerce City Grain unit train loading facility in Commerce City, Colo.
On July 20, the millers toured Progressive Farms east of Byers to see hard red and hard white winter wheat from the 2012 harvest, and visited the Cargill AgHorizons unit train loading facility in Byers for a briefing and tour.
“Flour millers in Taiwan prefer U.S. wheat and buy an average of about 80 percent of their total imports from American farmers,” said U.S. Wheat Associates (USWA) Country Director Ronald Lu, who traveled with the team. “It is still very important for these managers to see for themselves the effort that farmers, wheat breeders and grain handlers take to produce a reliable supply of high-quality wheat for the Taiwan market.”
Taiwan was the seventh largest export buyer of U.S. wheat with imports of 887.9 million metric tons (32.6 mil. bu.) in the recently completed 2011-12 marketing year. Taiwan was tenth largest export buyer of U.S. hard red winter wheat with imports of 242.8 million metric tons (8.9 mil. bu.).
The trade team consisted of Shin-Yao Lin, Chief Executive Officer, Top Food Industry Corporation; Hsin-Hong Kuo, General Manager, Hong Ming Enterprise Co., Flour Mill; Hsin-Ming Peng, Mill Manager and Board Director, Tai-I Flour Mill; Ching-Yang Lai, Special Assistant to General Manager, Tung Yang Flour Mill; Ronald L.
