The April 7, 2014 Crop Progress Report from USDA NASS-Colorado reported 17 percent of Colorado winter wheat was in very poor condition, 16 percent was poor, 32 percent was in fair condition, 31 percent was good, and four percent was in excellent condition.

In USDA’s March Prospective Planting Report, Colorado’s estimated winter wheat area planted was reduced 50,000 acres, from 2.9 million acres to 2.85 million acres. The 10-year average for Colorado winter wheat acres is 2.4 million acres planted.

Topsoil moisture was reported at 16 percent very short, 33 percent short, 50 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 25 percent very short, 33 percent short, 41 percent adequate, and one percent surplus.

In USDA’s  April 8 Crop Progress Report for the U.S. (18 winter-wheat producing states), NASS reported 10 percent of U.S. winter wheat was in very poor condition, 19 percent was poor, 36 percent was in fair condition, 30 percent was good, and five percent was in excellent condition.
