Colorado wheat producers seeded an estimated 2.2 million acres to winter wheat in the fall of 2022 for harvest in 2023, up 250,000 acres from the 2022 crop. For the fourth consecutive year, Langin was the most popular winter wheat variety seeded in Colorado, planted on 21.2 percent of the acreage for the 2023 crop, compared with 17.0 percent for the 2022 crop. Avery and Fortify SF tied for second place, accounting for 8.1 percent of the acreage. Byrd fell from second to fourth place, with 6.4 percent of the acreage. With 4.1 percent of the 2023 acreage, Crescent AX moved from fourth to fifth place. The top five varieties accounted for 47.9 percent of the total acreage seeded. Hatcher moved down from fifth to sixth place, with 3.5 percent of the acreage. Byrd CL Plus maintained seventh place with 3.1 percent of the acreage seeded. Guardian maintained eighth place with 2.4 percent of the acreage. WB 4483 claimed ninth place with 2.4 percent of the acreage. Judee completes the top ten with 2.2 percent of the acreage seeded. The top ten varieties represented 61.5 percent of the state’s total acreage seeded for the 2023 crop. The 2022 top ten varieties accounted for 67.5 percent of the total seeded acreage. Colorado wheat producers reported that 44.1 percent of their seed planted was certified wheat seed. Colorado wheat producers reported that 97.7 percent of their seed planted was treated with fungicide or insecticide. This report provides the results of the Winter Wheat Seedings by Variety Survey, 2023 Crop, conducted by the Mountain Regional Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, USDA. The survey was funded by the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee. The survey of winter wheat producers in Colorado was not sampled to provide a direct expansion of the seeded acreage by variety or a measure of the sampling error.
